Total Time 20 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ lbs ground beef (or swap with chicken or pork)
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • 4 garlic cloves, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger (or ¼ cup candied ginger)
  • 1–3 teaspoons Chinese five-spice powder
  • ⅓ cup soy sauce or tamari
  • ¼ cup Thai sweet chili sauce
  • ¼ cup sliced green onions
  • 4 Persian cucumbers, diced
  • 2 cups chopped cilantro
  • ½ cup chopped Thai basil
  • ⅓ cup crushed roasted peanuts
  • 8–10 soft flour tortillas, warmed
  • Chili paste, for serving
  • Toasted sesame oil, for serving

Instructions

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground meat and season with black pepper. Cook while breaking it apart until fully browned, about 5 minutes. Stir in garlic, ginger, and five-spice powder, cooking briefly until fragrant.
  2. Pour in the soy sauce and Thai chili sauce. Let the mixture simmer until slightly thickened and glossy, coating the meat evenly (about 3–5 minutes). Stir in a portion of the green onions, then remove from heat.
  3. Warm tortillas briefly until soft. Spoon the beef mixture down the center of each tortilla. Add cucumbers, cilantro, Thai basil, remaining green onions, and peanuts on top.
  4. Fold in the sides, then roll tightly into wraps. Repeat with remaining ingredients.
  5. Serve warm with chili paste, extra soy sauce, and a drizzle of sesame oil. Pair with steamed rice if serving as a main dish.
