Homemade Swirl Bread

  • For the pre-dough:
  • 1/2 cup (100ml) of warm milk
  • 4 tablespoons of flour
  • 1 teaspoon of sugar
  • 1 packet of dry yeast or 1 cube of fresh yeast
  • For the main dough:
  • 4 cups (450 grams) of flour
  • 1 egg
  • 3 tablespoons of sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 cup (200ml) of warm milk
  • 80 grams of butter (softened)
  • 3-4 tablespoons of cocoa powder

First, let's prepare the pre-dough. In a small bowl, mix together the flour, milk, yeast, and sugar. Cover it and let it rise for 30 minutes.

For the main dough, in a mixing bowl, combine flour, egg, sugar, salt, pre-dough, and milk. Knead until well combined. Then, add the butter in 3 portions, kneading well after each addition.

Divide the dough into 2 equal parts. Add cocoa powder to one part and knead it again. Place the dough portions in separate bowls, cover them with plastic wrap, and let them rise for 1 hour.

After rising, roll out each dough portion on a lightly floured surface to the length of your baking pan. Place the cocoa dough on top of the plain dough, pressing lightly to adhere.

Roll the dough into a log shape, leaving about 1 inch of plain dough at the end. Cut the dough into 12 strips. Twist each strip, alternating between left and right, then roll it into a spiral shape.

Place the prepared dough in a greased baking pan, cover it, and let it rise again for 1 hour.

Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) and place a heatproof dish filled with water inside.

Bake the bread in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes.

Once out of the oven, brush the top with butter or margarine while it's still warm. Enjoy your delicious Swirl Bread!
